Squirrel Removal in Valdosta
Squirrels in an attic gnaw constantly, and wiring is among the things they gnaw.
This is the animal most directly affected by what happened here. Losing more than 70% of the city’s tree canopy in a single night removed an enormous amount of squirrel habitat at once, and a displaced squirrel does not travel far; it takes the nearest cavity that will do. If you are hearing something in the attic in Valdosta and assuming it is a one-off, it is worth knowing how much competition for nesting space the storm created.
Squirrels in Lowndes County: who does what
Lowndes County Animal Services lists removal of rabies vector animals from inside the home among the services it provides, and refers broader human-wildlife conflict to UGA Extension. That is a genuinely different answer from most Georgia counties, where the county will not touch wildlife at all. It is worth knowing the limit of it: that covers the bat loose in your bedroom or the raccoon in your kitchen. It does not cover the colony in your roof, and it is not an exclusion; nobody is sealing the hole it came through.
Lowndes County Animal Services’ own FAQ describes opossums and squirrels as unlikely rabies carriers.
For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the UGA Extension, Lowndes County office is at 2102 East Hill Avenue, Valdosta, GA 31601, 229-333-5185 (office page).
What Georgia law says about squirrels
Gray and fox squirrels are game animals in Georgia (2025-26 season: 15 August to 28 February, 12 a day). DNR calls trapping or shooting effective for nuisance squirrels but asks residents to check with a Game Management office about a permit. A licensed operator may only cage-trap or exclude gray and flying squirrels, and must release them unharmed into suitable habitat. Georgia’s Rabies Control Manual says squirrels are almost never infected with rabies. All Georgia rules →

Signs, and why they matter
- Fast, light scampering in the attic or wall: loudest at dawn and again before dusk
- Scratching and persistent gnawing sounds
- A neat, round hole chewed through fascia, trim or a gable vent
- Chewed electrical wiring, which is a genuine and documented cause of house fires
- Chewed plumbing lines and irrigation tubing
How removal works
One-way exclusion doors let squirrels leave and stop them returning, followed by sealing every gnawed opening with steel or hardware cloth. Wood alone gets chewed through again within weeks.
Squirrel questions
How much does squirrel removal cost in Valdosta?
$300 – $550 typical, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).
Is there a wrong time of year to deal with squirrels?
Two litters a year, typically late winter and again in late summer, so there are two seasons where young may be present and unable to leave.
Who handles squirrels in Lowndes County?
Lowndes County Animal Services’ own FAQ describes opossums and squirrels as unlikely rabies carriers.
