Armadillo Removal in Valdosta

Last reviewed September 8, 2026 against Georgia DNR published rules and federal statute. How we research this site.

An armadillo can turn a good lawn over in a single night, and the burrows go under concrete.

Valdosta specifically

South Georgia soil and a long warm season make this a heavier armadillo market than middle Georgia. The Grand Bay wetlands complex north-east of the city is part of an 18,000-acre system of Carolina bays and forested swamp, second in size in Georgia only to the Okefenokee: soft, damp ground with plenty of grubs in it, and armadillos work outward from ground like that into the lawns beside it.

Armadillos in Lowndes County: who does what

Lowndes County Animal Services lists removal of rabies vector animals from inside the home among the services it provides, and refers broader human-wildlife conflict to UGA Extension. That is a genuinely different answer from most Georgia counties, where the county will not touch wildlife at all. It is worth knowing the limit of it: that covers the bat loose in your bedroom or the raccoon in your kitchen. It does not cover the colony in your roof, and it is not an exclusion; nobody is sealing the hole it came through.

For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the UGA Extension, Lowndes County office is at 2102 East Hill Avenue, Valdosta, GA 31601, 229-333-5185 (office page).

What Georgia law says about armadillos

Armadillos are on Georgia’s short statutory list of nongame animals that may be taken by any lawful method, but it is unlawful to keep a live one. Local firearm ordinances still apply in town. All Georgia rules →

Signs, and why they matter

  • Dozens of shallow cone-shaped holes across the lawn, appearing overnight
  • Lifted or rolled-back turf where they have rooted for grubs
  • A burrow entrance about 7–10 inches wide beside a slab, driveway or foundation
  • Burrows undermining driveways, patios, slabs and foundation edges
  • Repeated and expensive lawn damage

How removal works

Armadillos are poor candidates for bait trapping; they are after live grubs, not bait. Removal relies on directional trapping along travel routes and burrow entrances, then exclusion fencing dug in and angled outward.

Groundhogs in Valdosta

Groundhogs thin out toward the Florida line and Lowndes County is at the edge of it, so a confirmed groundhog here is worth a second look: burrow damage this far south is more often armadillo work, and the two get mixed up constantly. The animal matters, because what stops an armadillo will not stop a groundhog.

Groundhogs are on Georgia’s statutory list of nongame animals that may be taken by any lawful method, but a live one may not be kept. Licensed operators may handle them by all lawful methods.

Trapping and removal, then collapsing and backfilling the burrow system and fitting a dug-in barrier. Leaving the tunnels open invites the next occupant.

Armadillo questions

How much does armadillo removal cost in Valdosta?

$250 – $550 typical, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).

Is there a wrong time of year to deal with armadillos?

Year-round in the Deep South, worst in warm wet spells when grubs are near the surface.
